The Net (1995)

Filmed in 1995, "The Net" is a thriller by director Irwin Winkler. The movie stars Sandra Bullock and other actors include Jeremy Northam, Dennis Miller, and Diane Baker.

The film is about computer programmer Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock) being targeted by a criminal organization she accidentally discovered on the internet. When Angela accidentally picks up a diskette while on vacation, she discovers that a program on the diskette is actually a computer program used by a criminal organization. The criminal organization uses the program to steal all of Angela's credentials, money and life.

Angela struggles to save her life and expose the criminal organization. In the process, she meets and trusts Jack Devlin (Jeremy Northam), a former hacker. However, Jack has some concerns about his true intentions and realizes that he can't trust anyone.

Since the film was shot in the period when the place of the internet in our lives began to increase, it also makes reference to the technological and social changes of the period. It also touches on topics such as personal information security and the rise of cybercrime.

Angela Bennett is a programmer who lives alone and only communicates with her computers. One day, while she is doing data entry with her friend, she realizes that her friend has an illegal program. When she goes to her friend's house, she finds him dead and she starts to run away.

Shortly after, Angela's credit cards, identity information and all digital traces are erased and someone is working to destroy her. Angela struggles to find out who she is and survive. Meanwhile, she meets conspiracy theorist Jack Devlin, and together they fight to save Angela.

At the end of the movie, Angela regains her identity using computer technology and uncovers the people trying to destroy her. Meanwhile, She learns that Jack is actually an agent following him instead of saving him, and is forced to stand up to him.

The Net is considered one of the first films to address the issues of cybersecurity and identity theft, and these issues are still relevant today.

  • Angela Bennett, the main character of the movie, was originally conceived as a male character, but thanks to Sandra Bullock's performance and popularity, the character was changed to female.
  • At the time the movie was shot, the spread of the internet was still a new topic, and the movie therefore aroused an interest in the internet world.
  • During the filming of the film, many scenes were shot using a real computer, so the technological details of the film were realistically reflected.
  • The producers of the movie took precautions against the possibility of being attacked by a hacker due to the film's internet-oriented theme, and the computer systems were protected with extra security measures.
  • The security software called "Gatekeeper" used by the main character of the movie is not a real software, it is a concept made up in the script of the movie.
