Demolition Man is a 1993 American science fiction - action film. The film was directed by director Marco Brambilla and features actors such as Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock.
The movie takes place in Los Angeles in 1996. Violence and crime rates have skyrocketed, and the Los Angeles police department enlists ex-cop John Spartan to capture violent criminal Simon Phoenix. However, the conflict between Phoenix and Spartan leaves many people dead and both are sentenced to 70 years in cryogenic prison.
By 2032, Los Angeles is now a calm and crime-free place, and all forms of violence in society have disappeared. But Phoenix manages to escape from where he is still held in a cryogenic prison sentence and starts a new crime wave. Therefore, the police department reassigns Spartan, a former cop, to capture Phoenix.
However, after 70 years in prison, the world has changed and Spartan has a hard time adjusting to the new order. Even the concept of committing crimes is now forgotten and people have to follow strict rules to live a peaceful life. One of these rules is that all kinds of violent words are prohibited.
Spartan tries to adapt himself to the future new order as he races against time to capture Phoenix. In the process, he meets Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock), a member of the police department, and they start working together. The two perform devastating acts at certain locations in Phoenix's target city, and eventually confront Phoenix.
"Demolition Man" is known as a movie that combines elements of science fiction, action and comedy. The film can also be considered as an example of a dystopia with social and political messages.
